A Short Introduction to Our Centre

A year at Longview. (A manager’s view 2004-5)

It does not seem 12 months since I took over from Carol Jones as the manager of Longview the time has flown past. In the year I have been here a lot of changes have taken place. We now have some of the best rabbit/guinea pig accommodation in the society. Our small animal unit has now got an indoor aviary that is over 44 square feet and can be used to hold other species such as chinchillas and chipmunks.

Our ferrets now have a massive 2 storey living accommodation and at last our dogs have a secure area where they can be let off the lead and are free to run and play. The working conditions for staff and volunteers have been improved vastly in our 2 catteries and this makes it easier for the public to view them as well. There are still a few more changes to make and these will be completed in the near future.

The staff and volunteers continue to work tirelessly to maintain the smooth running of the centre and the well being of the animals in our care. Without the help of these dedicated volunteers our job here at Longview would be a lot more difficult than it already is. The staff we employ at Longview are some of the most hardworking I have ever worked with, the time and effort they put into every animal never fails to amaze me. Any animal that requires more time spending with it whether that is for medical or psychological reasons gets the care and attention required until we can find a home for it, and in several cases that has involved a member of staff adopting the animal themselves.

My job here is also made easier with the support of the branch and their ideas on how we should go forward with the animal welfare in the area we cover and the long-term future of the animal home. In an ideal world we would all like the money and location to have a purpose built animal centre with more accommodation and better facilities, but until that day we have to make the best of what we have and in my opinion we do exactly that.
