R.S.P.C.A.
Week in May:
Our collection week at Tesco during the National R.S.P.C.A. Week in May raised
£1,877.70 in cash and a very substantial amount in tins of dog
and cat food. Scooby Doo certainly helped to swell the coffers and most children
were captivated by him (only a few screamed in terror)! Many thanks to those
who dressed up as Scooby Doo and special thanks to Tesco for allowing us to
collect. We hope Tesco reaped some benefit from the numerous purchases of tinned
food which were quite a feature this year. One day we emptied 3 dustbins of
tins...
Silverdale
Stars
Last year the R.S.P.C.A. North Region was thrown into a massive rescue operation
at a house in Silverdale where over 240 animals needed to be moved into safe
and caring hands at very short notice. The animals, mostly dogs, were neglected
and in a very sorry state having been kept in filthy cages. They were in such
a bad state that even experienced R.S.P.C.A. staff did not know what breeds
they were dealing with. Some were so bad that head could not be distinguished
from tail.
Two of these little dogs Amber and Kenny, both Shih Tzus have since made very
heartening news as they were assessed by the charity Hearing Dogs and found
to be friendly, outgoing, people orientated, alert and willing to learn. They
were first allowed to become adjusted to the love of people and experience the
life of normal happy dogs before starting their training at the charity's centre
in Buckinghamshire. Here they learn to respond to many different everyday sounds
such as alarm clocks, doorbells, telephones, babies crying and smoke alarms.
Amber will go to a home in Scotland and Kenny will live in the South of England
where they will lead happy and fulfilled lives with their new families and make
the lives of their deaf owners much easier.
