Fostering

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding way to help animals and get involved with the charity.

Whilst we do our best to maximise the happiness and welfare of all the animal's lives in our care, we understand that ‘centre life’ can be a stressful environment for any animal, many of which have not always had the best start in life so if possible we try to place some of our animals in foster homes to help them feel more comfortable.

This also enables us to help many more animals by using space at the centre for those who cope/adapt better. We offer flexibility for short or long term fostering (depending on the animal) and full support, veterinary care, food, bedding etc will be provided by the branch. General criteria include:

  • You must be the owner of the home or seek permission from the owner

  • You must have enough spare time to commit to fostering. Many of our rescue animals cannot be left for long periods, which means you may need to be at home the majority of the time

  • If you are fostering an animal who can live alongside your pets, your pets must be fully vaccinated, and neutered if you are taking in the same species on foster

  • Ideally you will be able to drive, have access to a vehicle and live within an hour’s drive of the animal centre in Stalmine

  • You must be over 18 and ideally have had previous experience of caring for the species of animal you wish to foster

  • You will need to have access to an enclosed, secure outdoor area for dogs (e.g. a walled yard or fenced garden) or a quiet indoor area for nervous cats

  • You must be willing to communicate with the animal centre team on a regular basis to provide updates

  • You will be asked to provide two people we can contact for a references

If you feel you may be able to help or would like to discuss fostering in more detail, please contact the animal centre.
